The building was constructed by the state and stayed unfinished for quite awhile, until a group of Friends volunteers and Park Manger, Art Yerian, who was Wildlife Supervisor at the time, decided to take on the project in 2003. With Art Yerian as Project Manager, five Friends volunteers worked daily, until the state of the art Reptile House was completed.
The keyhole and behind the scenes work area, was designed and constructed by the late Don Demarest, Tom Sinclair, Bill Perko. The 21 exhibit areas were hand painted by volunteers, Dorothy Hahn and Virginia Svoboda. The project was funded and completed by the Friends and opened to the public in March 2004.
